Birdseed: November 16, 2009
Jason Elam knows the life of a kicker is often lonely.
But when he gets attention, it’s for one of two reasons: A game winning kick or a miss that could have made a difference in the outcome of a game.
Elam missed a 34-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter Sunday that would have given [...]

Svitek’s NFL Journey Hits Atlanta
Some fans may not recognize — or initially be able to pronounce — the name Will Svitek.
But they should.
The four-year veteran stepped in for Sam Baker (ankle) in the second half of Sunday’s win over Washington, playing a role in some big runs by Michael Turner.
Svitek (pronounced Svee-tech) signed with the team in the offseason [...]

Smith Focused on Continued Progress
More cameras than usually filled the media room in Flowery Branch Monday afternoon for Head Coach Mike Smith’s weekly press conference.
It wasn’t long before questions moved toward a very non-football topic.
Smith was asked again about an incident on the sideline in Sunday’s win over the Redskins where former Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall got into a [...]

Notes on Falcons, Patriots Inactives
No Wes Welker for the Patriots.
No Jerious Norwood for the Falcons.
Not exactly a 1:1 exchange, but it’s close.
Welker, who has 12 catches for 93 yards in one game this season, is Tom Brady’s favorite target in blitz situations. He’s also pretty good in the regular offense — team-leading 11 catches for 1,165 yards last season.
Norwood [...]

Williams to Start for Grimes
News from the Falcons starting lineup, where new cornerback Brian Williams is slated to start ahead of cornerback Brent Grimes.
Also on the inactive list, several Falcons who won’t suit up against the Dolphins, including recently-acquired cornerback Tye Hill. Second-round pick William Moore (hamstring) will also not play.
Other Falcons inactives include:
QB John Parker Wilson (third quarterback)
LB [...]

The Need to be Versatile
If you watched a college football game over the weekend you likely saw massive linemen slamming against one another on some hot, early September afternoon.
If you played close attention, you probably saw some subs come into the game to give the front five some relief.
Either way, you saw two gigantic lineups on either side of [...]

Auditions in Progress
It takes time to figure out starting lineups in the NFL. At most positions, the audition process could take the entire preseason.
But when it comes to looking for a punt returner, it’s more obvious to see who has the skills to succeed.
And it starts with the first preseason game.
Wide receiver Eric Weems got the first [...]

Musings on the Depth Chart
The Falcons released the first “unofficial” depth chart earlier this week ahead of the team’s preseason trip to Detroit (it’s always called unofficial because the only official one is on Head Coach Mike Smith’s white board and on the game day stats page).
There weren’t many surprises, but a few changes or questions the coach addressed [...]

Numbers Game
Just received word on jersey numbers for some of the recent additions to the team’s roster.
Mike Peterson (No. 53)
Will Sviteck (No. 74)
Brett Romberg (No. 65)
Peterson, 32, started his career in Indianapolis but enjoyed success as a Jaguar including four straight seasons with 100 or more tackles. He also has 15 career interceptions.
Peterson reunites with former [...]
