Lunch Break: Linebacker Lowdown
One of the best quotes of the season came via the mouth of Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton.
On a day when many in the locker room were vocally frustrated about the lack of Pro Bowl nominations (no Falcons will go to the game), Lofton spoke simply and in a soft — but forceful — tone.
“My season [...]

Another Falcon to Injured Reserve
Injuries keep adding up for the Falcons.
Tuesday the team placed reserve linebacker and special teams stalwart Tony Gilbert on injured reserve. The Falcons also released recently re-signed wide receiver Troy Bergeron and signed tight end Jason Rader and fullback Verron Haynes.
Gilbert is the seventh player — fourth on defense — to go on IR this [...]

Additions to the Formula
Atlanta got 11 wins in 2008 thanks to safe play from a rookie quarterback, dominant runs from a new running back and steady play from a work-in-progress defense.
It came together in the form of early scores and lead preservation.
Through the first quarter of the Falcons game at San Francisco Sunday, the team returned to that [...]

Making Monday Moves
The Falcons just announced the release of safety Jamaal Fudge, a move necessary to keep the roster at 53 players with the addition of cornerback/safety Brian Williams.
A graduate of Clemson, Fudge was originally signed by the Falcons off of waivers on Sept. 2, 2008. Last season, he competed in 10 games and recorded 12 tackles.
Notably [...]

Prepping the ‘Safety’ Net
Safety Thomas DeCoud got some extra reps in Saturday’s preseason opener, mostly to get acclimated to game speed after spending much of his rookie season special teams.
DeCoud was credited with one tackle (by the official game book) but that number is likely to go higher after coach film review.
Head Coach Mike Smith was pleased with [...]

The Good, Bad and Ugly
Moments after the Falcons 27-26 loss to the Lions on Saturday, Detroit offensive lineman Ephraim Salaam joked for Falcons center Todd McClure to hurry back to Atlanta.
Salaam, a former Falcon, made the remarks outside the locker rooms at Ford Field. McClure, baseball cap on head, smiled and fired back with a return comment.
You would never [...]

Keeping an Eye on the Defense
BLOGGER’S NOTE: Time to pack up and get ready to go to the locker room. Continued game coverage on AtlantaFalcons.com. More blogs to come postgame. Also, you can follow my updates on Twitter.
Don’t look for Matthew Stafford to be overly kind to Tony Gilbert at any Georgia football reunions.
The Falcons middle linebacker picked off the [...]

Roaming the Dome
The Falcons took the field at the Allstate All-Access Roam the Dome Saturday with two goals: Work hard and put on a show.
With thousands of fans in attendance and a mock game that featured turnovers and three touchdown passes, both missions were accomplished.
Head Coach Mike Smith split his roster and ran the team through 11-on-11 [...]

Birdseed: April 20, 2009
You’ve probably noticed my series of mock drafts over the past seven weeks. Judging from the comments, just about everyone has an opinion on what the Falcons will do with the No. 24 pick.
But how do you feel about the rest of the first round?
Let’s get this draft week started by kicking off a staple [...]
