Official: Houston Traded to Lions
The Falcons confirmed Monday evening that cornerback Chris Houston has been traded to the Detroit Lions for a sixth-round selection. The teams will also swap picks in the fifth-round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Atlanta now has six picks in the Draft — a first, third, fourth, fifth and two sixths. The team traded its second-round [...]

Week 11 Television Notes (and Maps)
Time for a little behind-the-scenes info…
Each week NFL teams and their public relations departments schedule conference calls or production meetings between key coaches and players and members of the broadcast crew.
Some are longer than others. In the case of this week’s Falcons-Giants game, it may be little more than a cup of coffee and “how [...]

Prepping the ‘Safety’ Net
Safety Thomas DeCoud got some extra reps in Saturday’s preseason opener, mostly to get acclimated to game speed after spending much of his rookie season special teams.
DeCoud was credited with one tackle (by the official game book) but that number is likely to go higher after coach film review.
Head Coach Mike Smith was pleased with [...]

Kickers, Golfers and Major League Pitchers
Jason Elam, like most NFL kickers, looks the part of a coach or trainer more than a player.
He’s smaller in stature than most of the team and is the oldest player on the roster, by six years.
But 17 seasons in professional football have been kind to Elam.
His six-and-a-half page biography in the Falcons media guide [...]

Peterson: ‘It’s a Process’
Falcons fans expressed plenty of concern (in blog comments and on the message boards) about the team’s defense as the Detroit Lions marched down the field on their opening drive in Saturday’s preseason game.
But the Falcons were able to force a field goal — the Lions’ only points of the first half.
Starting outside linebacker Mike [...]

Birdseed: August 16, 2009
Welcome to the preseason.
Some of you will spend the next three weeks picking at every bad play or loss. Others will take exhibition games as a sign that real football is just around the corner. Still others will watch every snap and break down exactly what the Falcons have for the upcoming season.
What better time [...]

The Good, Bad and Ugly
Moments after the Falcons 27-26 loss to the Lions on Saturday, Detroit offensive lineman Ephraim Salaam joked for Falcons center Todd McClure to hurry back to Atlanta.
Salaam, a former Falcon, made the remarks outside the locker rooms at Ford Field. McClure, baseball cap on head, smiled and fired back with a return comment.
You would never [...]

Keeping an Eye on the Defense
BLOGGER’S NOTE: Time to pack up and get ready to go to the locker room. Continued game coverage on AtlantaFalcons.com. More blogs to come postgame. Also, you can follow my updates on Twitter.
Don’t look for Matthew Stafford to be overly kind to Tony Gilbert at any Georgia football reunions.
The Falcons middle linebacker picked off the [...]

Auditions in Progress
It takes time to figure out starting lineups in the NFL. At most positions, the audition process could take the entire preseason.
But when it comes to looking for a punt returner, it’s more obvious to see who has the skills to succeed.
And it starts with the first preseason game.
Wide receiver Eric Weems got the first [...]
