Birdseed: April 27, 2010

As if you didn’t need another sign Falcons football is right around the corner, the team announced mini camp dates this week.

It’s the NFL version of spring practice, only this group includes rookies and free agent additions.

It’s where a team starts to form.

By the time the Falcons take the field for the first time in 2010 on May 7 the post-draft discussion and criticism will have faded. The team will be a few days stronger from offseason conditioning. The rookies will, if they haven’t all ready, lost the butterflies from stepping into Flowery Branch HQ.

It’s the small, but very important step toward training camp and the 2010 season.

Fans can watch a pair of practices on May 8 and see how it all comes together.

And you thought the draft was the only offseason event you could look forward to…

You knew this was going to come up as soon as the Jaguars released the defensive tackle. After all, he had some of the best years of his career when Mike Smith was his defensive coordinator. He also was the subject of one of the greatest web videos… Ever.

The smoke has cleared and I’m a bit more optimistic about what happened last week. We just didn’t get any faster is my concern. We actually got slower. a slew of 4.6’s at WR and a couple of 4.5’s at CB. Yeah we definitely got slower. That’s not going to get it against WHO DAT!

the jaguars just released big john henderson he is is one of smittys boys from jacksonville lets sign him he will require double teams all day this will allow abraham and beirman to put up double digit sacks numbers or if we dont get him we need a defensive end what about a trade for osi umenirya what do the giants want for him but if they want too much then big john will do remember in 08 when abraham had 16.5 sacks you can accredit that to big grady jackson for requiring double teams all of our dt weigh 300 lbs or less we need more beef on the d line we have some athletic pass rushing dt’s but no monster 325+ tackles that require double teams so come on dimitroff and smitty we have three ex jaguars on the roster already peterson, williams and fudge one more could no

We are an impatient, judgmental bunch. Falcons’ fans, that is. And this is probably due in no small part to the franchise’s history.

This is not making excuses for the chronic cynicism but… it has to be taken into account. Seeing the bigger picture is often like missing the forest for the trees.

The Falcons did indeed rise from the flaming ashes of the Vick debacle to an 11-5 season, and did finally beat that horrid little monkey with last year’s 9-7, and did so with half the team laid up with injuries while still fighting off a brutal schedule.

Imagine what we can do this year with a somewhat more manageable sched, a healthy team and a whole gaggle of new talent!

But now, speaking strictly for myself, I do have to wonder why, between the Super bowl and the Hall of Fame Game, there are so many months with 31 days!

Football season is always either half over or half a year away. Why god, why?

On defense Falcons management are gambling that Peria Jerry’s return will give them some additional inside rush that would prevent double teaming of Abraham and that a combo of Sidbury/Bierman can handle the other side. I wish I have some of what they’re smoking! The jury is still out on Jerry, we knew he was injury prone coming out of college. Sidbury/Bierman is a reach. Neither one is going to scare any team’s Defensive Coordinator. Jamal Anderson will see most of his reduced time as a DT on third down.

I agree with OJ! I would take a one year contract flyer on T.O. I can’t take another season of watching the mediocre play of Michael Jenkins! He plays with no passion and no guts. Ever see him catch a pass going across the middle or contesting a reception with a safety? T.O would be a great one year addition that might put us into the Super Bowl! What would we have to lose?

Jenkins is not so much slow as he is a poor receiver. He doesn’t do well catching the ball in traffic and he does not get sufficient space between himself and the defender because his moves are not crisp enough. Even a “slow” receiver can get enough separation if he runs good routes. Steve Largent was not that fast and neither is Steve Smith, but no one “wanted” the ball more than they did.
