Falcons Add Peters with 83rd Pick

The Falcons selected Kentucky defensive tackle Corey Peters with the first of two third-round picks in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Peters, 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, posted a career high in tackles with 42.5 in his senior season. He also had 12 tackles for loss. He was a three-year starter for the Wildcats.

The team visited with Peters toward the end of the pre-draft process. He said he got to know the coaching staff during those visits and is excited to get involved in the Falcons system.

Peters said he worked at nose and under tackle in Lexington.

“I’m extremely comfortable in a 4-3,” he said.

Peters recorded 146 career tackles (83 solo), 27 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and one interception.

He was a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection from 2007-09 while being named Kentucky’s Most Improved Defensive Player by the team’s coaches in ‘07.

“I maintain we’re always looking to have a very depthful and active defensive line,” Dimitroff said. “Rotation (and) versatility is huge along the front. We believe we added some consistency there as well.”

“I knew they were interested but I got so nervous once the third round started,” Peters said of his interaction with the Falcons. “Everything was so crazy as far as the draft went… I really didn’t know what was going to happen but I was just hoping and praying for the best opportunity.

“I’m excited to get down there.”

Babineaux will get a suspension but he remains a Falcon. He got caught with a little weed. He didn’t kill dogs or rape women. If Atlanta got rid of a player everytime they got into minor legal issues we would be starting over every couple of years. I think all of the picks were solid. Corey Peters and Mike Johnson are smart, solid football players. Not flashy picks and may have been there later but solid none the less. Trey Lewis and Thomas Johnson are probably gone and Johnson takes Dahl’s spot eventually. I think Denver taking J.D.Walton threw Dimitroff a curve.

Everyone that has something bad to say about the pick we made needs to shut the f*** up. This is why yall are sittin on the couch watching the draft and they are actually in the draft room making the picks. BECAUSE THEY KNOW. Each one of yall have no idea because if you did then you would be our GM and not TD. He knows what the hell he is doing that is why he is our GM. Everyone praises the first round pick and is on board with the falcons and then when you dont agree with it, everyone says IM DONE. The ones that say Im done are still watching the draft and intrested on who the next person is we draft. You are the ones that still buy season tickets and single game tickets during the football season. I think they know what they are doing in house before any of us know what is going on. Think about who we have right now and think of why we drafted him. One reason is because of babs and another reason is because the bust pick we made in j anderson. One of them if not both is gone, MAYBE. Nobody knows, but THEY do. Yall kill me with all this fair weather fan s***. Why dont you wait until the season to see what they do, and if they dont do anything then come to this blog and bitch about it like you are now. Unitl then IN TD WE TRUST.

flacons are done they have to wait another year to go to the superbowl….. we had so many other needs then DT ……. we could have got a wide reciever ….. defensive end….. even running back but at the end get a defensive end that would have been slelected in 6th 7th round even if this guy was gone we would have find anotehr DT but wasting our top thrid round pick on him with good defenive end and cornerbacks available… good luck even this year we are going to have hard time getting to the quarterback and watch our defenisve backs are going to be push around because of our line men.

babs is smokin dope and p. jerry is hurt, but dang man we still have like ten defensive tackels on our depth chart. p. jerry, babs, j. anderson, the dude from georgia tech that we picked last year. and there are a couple more, one guy with the last name johnson. anyway we still dont have a pass rush, end of discussion.

truee our corner backs are going to be so vulnerable this years too we are going to ahve the same starting defensive line that we had in 2009 with a lack of pass rush which will give even a worst quarterback in nfl to throw for about 300 against us ….and what are we going to blame on our whole defense …… this will make hard for our offense since they have to score more point on the board….and now their is no way period we are going to beat saints in both games …… yeah i guess falcons are just trying to save money by getting all the cheap players.. after all we are going to be a medicore team once againn……….. sorry tony gonzalez… man u probably have to wait another year or u should just go to another team if u want to ahve that super bowl ring that badly…

News flash… Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock have no clue what intricate details NFL Teams are looking for in players. No one really knows how high Corey Peters was on other team draft boards… He may just be the best value for our scheme. I don’t like this pick personally, but I have not spent hours reviewing game film and talking football with the players. TD and his staff have. If TD’s pick flop year in and year out, he will be out of the job. I think he likes his job enough to try and pick good players for our scheme.

You guys have no idea what you’re talking about. another reciver is the last thing that we need. adding a DT and with perry coming into the lineup a passrush will be generated. If any of you duds remember the reason we drafted jerry was because he takes two blockers allowing abraham to be free, and with lawrence jr. developing we will be fine. Adding peters gives a good third option as the falcons love rotation. Clearly if they took him that early it was because anotehr team was interested. About the last pick of the day, any true falcons fan would know the injury problem we had on the O-line last year, a 6′5 300 and somting pound G is exactly what we need.

Wow, I can’t believe I’m reading some of the stuff on this blog. First we have a DAMN good team right now. Minus the injuries last years record would have been better than what it was. Had Elam made a field goal or two……anyway.
To our FAIR weather Fans. We don’t need players like you think we need players. We will have a consistant depth chart. Remove a piece replace a piece, and miss NOTHING. Ok, Jerry back healthy with J Abraham and Kroy (Sidburry) and believe it or not I like J Anderson with his hand in the dirt. That is a solid DL. We have added speed at LB with Spoon next to Nicholas and Lofton. We are solid at the safty position a real coner in D Robinson, and either Grimes or Owens will step up. Plus don’t forget how well B Williams played before he got hurt. So what is the complaint? I see us drafting for depth, and consistantcy. The pass rush wasn’t there but it wasn’t because we didn’t have the pieces. And, who is to say that any of the sexy picks would do what you think they would do.I can see Kroy and Spoon coming off one corner J Abraham , and Nicholas off the other with Jerry and Lofton locking down the middle. And J Anderson in the back field maing the rb run a different route just because he is back there (Like Last year). We are better than ok. If you think you are complaining now, wait until some people have to get cut….some of your favs are going to be gone.

Who ever is with these picks are obviously post MV. The whole “new way” of doing things. TD and Smitty want perfect players, and darnit if their going to let a thing like talent get in the way of accomplishing their goal. Getting Turner, Drafting Matty, getting Tony G and now drafting spoon was/is/are great moves for our franchise! But all you folks acting as if our front office can do no wrong, need to cut it out. These two 3rd round picks were ill advised and premature. Yes, they could have done way better. They didn’t and they know that they didn’t. Let’s hope we get it together tomorrow and make some trades, pick some play makers on O. Draft a kicker! Whooooo! There’s not a darn thing we can do about it!

If Everson Griffen is so great why is he still available? TD made a living drafting late and finding talent where no one else was able to see their value. All of you people following the draft knowledge of Todd McShay and other draftniks, tell me something, why don’t you hear from McShay after the 2nd round? Because he doesn’t invest the time required to truly scout these players, TD and staff do.

You can pick up very good receivers in the 4th or 5th. A kicker, a project player. Maybe a decent player or two pre-season. Tony, Harry, Roddy, Mike, Finneran, and…? There’s only so many 4 man ssets they are going to run. If Douglas makes it back, there will be maybe 75 catches for the the #2–we have that covered with different players. The major problem we have had is a poor rush that is made worse by poor coverage. Sid, Kroy will be better. If Jerry makes it back and Peters upgrades Johnson or Lewis we will be significantly better. 9-7 with key injuries and little depth. This is already a better team and we’re not done yet. I also see Ryan as much better thhis year. You add players like Dunta and Spoon and Moore and Peria and get Williams back you gotta be a football moron to not think this team got better. We’re a playoff team. If we’re close they will pinpoint the need next year.

I’m not a fan of this pick as if we wanted to get a dt I have no problem with but we need a big nose tackle like Cam Thomas from UNC who is one of the top-tier players at that position or we could wait and select Kade Weston in the later rounds.

First off i’m not doubting any of these players they may be good players. Are they ELITE players? NO. We could have went in other directions and still got these guys later on in the draft. When you look at the strength of the draft regardless of drafting by need or best player on the board, our draft is conservative. They are ok picks. BUT WHAT EVERYONE IS TRYING TO SAY…. to all you TD and Falcon front office suck ups, is that all we need are a few pieces to get to the Superbowl, like New Orleans did it, they brought in Major pieces and they went from a Superbowl no show to turn out Superbowl champs. I understand they want to build our team up from the draft but with that being said. How long are we putting off this Superbowl run, teams are getting better every year. Take our stats from last and plug in these new draft picks, they don’t change use as a team drastically, they’re just safe picks, excluding our first rounder. The least than can do is draft somebody that will sell out jerseys or fill seats. The fans here want a nasty huge DT, or big hitting saftey, or a 4.2 DB/WR. We need a game changer. We have a good team, but we will continue to just be a good team not a great team, until we plug in some players that can push us over the top. They can’t keep going year after year disappointing fans like this. Since Vick, since Duckett, since Dunn. They re-sgin Jenkins who drops balls, Finneran when was the last time he played a whole season? Norwood has his injuries, Gonzo may retire next year, we got two players from the Jaguars at the end of their careers. We need to do something, give us a kick returner or something TD. Just to keep us quiet GEEESH. Falcons have No Swagger. Still love them there my team, I just feel like “We the fans are standing strong at attention on a sinking ship praying for a miracle………”

First of all we finished 9-7 in an injury riddled season. The loss of Jerry allowed teams to double and triple team Abe. Peters is a 300 pounder. We lost that with Grady. Anybody remember Abe had TWO 2 sack games before Perry got hurt???? We gave up coverage to linebackers not getting deep enough. It wasn’t just corners. Spoon solves that prob. William Moore has been hurt. He’ll be back. Having Douglas back will help our Off. It gives Matt another weapon. Donte Robinson will solve a problem and Grimes problem was he plays better on the right side. 4 picks in the last 3 games. Williams will be back also. Pay attention to your team. We’re stacked. And the big names on the board don’t always translate into players. Marquis Colston proved that for the saints. A seventh round pick. Which one of y’all was paying attention to him??? Lofton was a 3rd rounder and shoulda made the pro bowl last year. WE ARE GOOD. We need depth. On both lines. If we stay healthy watch what we do.

Why are so many people high on Griffen. He had one good year, and it wasn’t last year. It was when USCs defense was so good, the other team couldn’t figure out who to block, so everyone looked good. Last year he lost his starting position and when he did play he wasn’t all that good. Trust in TD until the players he picks show, by their play, that he was wrong.

This is a bad pick. we needed another pass rusher since Anderson is clearly a bust. There were three available and we didn’t take one. Thats just sad. Picks like this make me think the falcons don’t wanna win a superbowl.

I think the Falcons will be better this year! All of these people saying they don’t like this pick or that pick….who cares they are not getting paid to make these decisions. TD and Mr. Smith are. Mike Smith knows what he is looking for and what he needs. Think about where he has come from, Part of the coaching staff in Bmore during there superbowl run ( Great D) Jacksonville, ( Great D) (when he was there). and now the falcons. Listen if you are a fan of the ATLANTA FALCONS, we need to stand behind our team! I mean the first time in franchise history , we had back 2 back winning seasons, they are doing something right. Peters could end up being the next Wilfork, who knows…only time will tell….Lokking forward to this season!
