Passing an Important Test

Most Falcons players are done with college.

But that doesn’t mean they’ve escaped the occasional test.

Whether they knew it or not, the Birds were being quizzed Sunday afternoon at The Meadowlands. The New York Jets ran out of the tunnel with playoff hopes alive. The night before, Atlanta’s postseason hopes were laid to rest.

Losers of six of their last eight games, the Falcons needed something good to happen. They needed to show heart can’t get eliminated from perspective.

With a 10-7 win and a game-winning drive inside the final five minutes, Head Coach Mike Smith said his team passed the test “with flying colors.”

“I thought yesterday’s game was an examination of our team’s character,” Smith said in his Monday press conference. “We’re going to play for 60 minutes. That was evident yesterday. It took us almost 58 minutes to get the lead in that ball game and, when we did, we were able to make a play on defense to end the ball game.”

When the dust settled, second-year cornerback Brent Grimes had two interceptions. Thomas DeCoud had another. The Falcons defense also held the league’s No. 1 rushing offense to less than 100 yards.

There was just one big play, a 65-yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez to Braylon Edwards. But those were the only points scored by the Jets in the game.

“They’re coming along as the season has progressed; they maturing individually and collectively,” Smith said of his secondary, which has taken heat from the start of the year due to youth and knack for giving up big plays.

Another youngster passed a different test for the Falcons, starting with a pregame medical exam.

Quarterback Matt Ryan threw the game-winning pass to Tony Gonzalez, leading a key drive despite early struggles. Ryan missed the previous two games with turf toe and the Falcons wanted to make sure footing was sound in the snowy Meadowlands before letting the reigning rookie of the year take game snaps.

Ryan was helped by an offensive line that allowed no sacks and just two quarterback hits.

“He’s sore today which we expected,” Smith said. “We’re going to have to manage that situation through the next two weeks. Matt toughed it out. He came back a lot quicker and earlier than a lot of people thought he would.”

“You could see he had no issues in terms of planting on the surface out there and that was really my biggest concern at that time on Sunday morning.”

In his Monday presser, Smith also reviewed the team’s current injury list which again includes running back Michael Turner. Turner re-injured his ankle after just one carry in Sunday’s game.

“He tried to play one more play and it was a play in which he had to block and it was obvious he couldn’t put any pressure on it,” Smith said.  ”Our main focus for Mike is to get him healthy as quickly as possible and I know that’s Mike’s mindset as well. We have a game this week. I don’t know if Mike’s going to be ready to go but I know he’s a fast healer. Things happen sometimes in weather conditions… It may be different when you’re inside so we’re hoping he’ll respond and come back.”

J.Mike Has anyone really researched our draft/free agent prospects for next year and blogged it? Is there a good website/ blog where ATL fans can discuss such things. I know we are not experts on such things but I wuold love to hear others thoughts.

I want to see back to back winning seasons. If we are going to be a winning team we are going to have to learn to pick from the bottom of the draft. We have a good team and we are getting better. I understand we don’t have much patience due to our history. I want the monkey off our back. I don’t play to lose and neither should they. I pay to see the best team they can put on the field and real men don’t quit.

HELL NO TO LOSING THE NEXT TWO!! Work hard guys to win out the season!!! . So we miss a couple of slots on the draft board. Winning is everything. Build up momentum for next year and get that “never consecutive winning seasons” monkey off this team’s back! The next two games are our playoffs. I hope the players want to be the ones that make this piece of history for our franchise. Make it happen Falcons!!

the falcons came in with high expectations even with a tough schedule. if they can still finish 9-7 with as many injuries as we have had on the starting front then thats a good season. losing jerry on the line was a huge blow and having to sit out turner and ryan defiantly hurt us in a couple games. william moore didnt even get to start a game and i am really interested in seeing what he can do. i think he can become a great player in this league. sidbury looks great and so did biermann at times. i am still unsettled with our corners. we need to go out and get on big shut down starting corner eventhough brian williams was doing good till he got hurt. i still think we need one more starter there. also nicholas didnt impress me at all this year i believe we need to invest in a new starting outside backer. we got one of the best in lofton and peterson but nicholas is not up to par. not to many big holes in the d just enough to break in down though. jamaal anderson is a bust. everybody knows that and babineaux is a good player just not a smart person in general considering him smoking illegal substances. so sit turner the rest of the season and place him on ir so he doesnt damage his ankle any worse. see if matt can play week to week so we can keep our offense on the field with clock management unlike redman. lets finish up strong and work towards next year where all our starters can be healthy and know the play book twice as well. playoff bound next year!

I agree wit wat AKM says. THe only disagreement is on losin. I think we should try to win thjese last two games although we are out of the playoffs. I hate to say it, but I personally think we should try for Joe Haden from Florida. or if he’s not there, try to get Taylor Mays from USC. If we dont get a top rated Corner, at least et someone who can assist Chris Houston for when Brian Williams get healthy next year.

we seem to be doing better w/o c houston and we dont miss that LB that went to the cowboys. Winning is contagious. win em all and the draft will take care of itself. Still trying to find out the lgth of the field goal we missed in that windy weather. No it was long though.

The Falcon’s Defensive Needs: (1) Intimidator in the deep secondary, William Moore might fill the bill. (2) Pass Rushing Defensive End, will have to come via Free Agency. (3) Shut Down Cornerback, will have to come by Free Agency.
Offensive Needs: (1) More Reliable Receiver than M. Jenkins, draft in first round. (2) More depth at Running Back, draft in third round, we have no second round pick. (3) Better depth at Guard, draft in fourth round.

If we’re going to compete with the elite teams next year, we can’t use only the draft, it takes at least one to two seasons to develop the talent at most positions. QB, RB, and WR are the exceptions, if they have the talent.
Keep in mind that in the NFL, 90% of rosters turnover every 3 years. That’s why NFL means “Not For Long”. We’re only a few key players away from being an elite team, that’s why Free Agency exists, so teams like ours can get people who can put us over the top. Last year’s FA signings, people like Bret Romberg and Mike Peterson were not enough. Tony Gonzalez was a trade.
