Birdseed: October 26, 2009
We all have bad days. But what about those bad days that include watching a highly-publicized defeat for your employer followed by a late-night plane ride?
Let’s just say it’s an interesting combination.
Sometimes after a tough loss, like the Falcons 37-21 day at Dallas, I find myself trying to get in the heads of players. I focus more on mental toughness than in-game decision making. I’m fascinated by professional athletes who, in the wake of plays good and bad, can refocus on the next pitch, snap or shot. With football’s weekly opera and buildup we’re left with the additional variables of time.
And redemption.
“We’ll get ‘em next time.”
Mondays after a loss aren’t completely different from Mondays after a win in Flowery Branch. There’s no time to be mellow, but you’ll spot some long faces for the first couple hours. If anything, the mood is slightly more positive than you’d expect because a chance at a rebound is just six or seven days away.
Today on my trip for morning coffee I passed Head Coach Mike Smith. As always, we greeted each other with a warm, “Good morning, how are you?”
Same thing happened after a Week 6 win over Chicago. Same thing will likely happen — win or lose — for the rest of the season.
The dynamics may be a little different, but you can never lose sight of the defining characteristic of the NFL. It’s a business.

One final look before we hit the 24-hour mark. It’s not just a “rule of thumb,” it’s a way of life in the NFL.
Brooking: ‘It was a big game for me personally,’ Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’ve received some Web-based messages from fans who weren’t too pleased with Keith Brooking on Sunday. I think this article does a good job summing up how emotion drives everything between the white lines. If you stop to think, it’s what makes the game great.
Romo, Austin hook up for 2 scores in Cowboys’ win, ESPN.com
Anyone who thought Miles Austin’s 250-yard game against the Chiefs was a fluke is eating a little crow.

On next week’s game: “Win, and the NFC South is up for grabs. Lose, and it’s time to jockey for a wild-card berth.”
Whatever happened to Michael Turner?, ESPN.com
Until today I think most Falcons fans didn’t consider the slowdown in the run game a huge problem, especially since the passing game was working well. Today things feel a little different.
Cowboys rip Falcons’ secondary to shreds, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well that headline isn’t very nice.
This is the Cowboys team we expected, FoxSports.com
This is certainly a case where the Cowboys started to live up to expectations. But, given the Falcons 80-play touchdown drive to open the game and solid, three-and-out on defense a few plays later, you have to think something fell apart.
Romo frustrates Falcons defensive line, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Frustrated? Yes. Things started to unravel when Tony Romo escaped three defensive linemen to find Patrick Crayton with a first-half touchdown pass.
Defense contains Gonzalez, White, (Fort Worth) Star-Telegram
Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez are still Pro Bowl receivers. Sunday’s game was an example of the true importance of offensive line play.
5 things we learned from the Dallas game, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Something tells me more than ‘5′ things will be on the board when Smitty speaks to the team this week. Learning opportunities aren’t always easy.

Alright, I really don’t know how the nice way to say this is, but here we go. How can everyone else in the world see that Brent Grimes sucks and deserves to be on the Kansas city practice squad (at best) and not a STARTING cornerback, but the Falcons. Who cares if he can jump over barrels at practice! Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the Falcons but we deserve better from our front office. Brian Williams got hurt, so I would have thought lets make a trade for a good corner. We finally have a chance for a good year and we start Brent Grimes to blow it for us. I know one person can’t blow the whole game, but that was before Brent Grimes was announced as a starting cornerback. Come on Team lets develope Chris Owens and hope we pick up a corner next year. I hope we work hard on Defense because we have New Orleans Monday. Please don’t let the fans down. Brent Grimes PLEASE GO RUIN SOMEONE ELSES FAVORITE TEAM.
FALCONS FALCONS WHAT YOU GONNA DO WHEN THE SAINTS COME FOR YOU…………..
MAN THAT GAME YESTERDAY WAS A SHAME FOR OUR SECONDARY, ESPECIALLY FOR GRIMES AND HOUSTON, WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THEY DOING OUT THERE YESTERDAY.
I HAVE MY SCORE BOOK LISTED AS FALCONS 4-3 AND NOT 4-2 CAUSE THEY WILL LOOSE TO THE SAINTS
SAINTS FINAL SCORE 106, BREES 2,382 PASSINGS YARDS AGAINST GRIMES AND HOUSTON.
FALCONS FINAL SCORE 17, OFFENSE WILL DO GOOD AS ALWAYS, DEFENSE WILL SUCK AS ALWAYS.
PROVE ME WRONG FALCONS DEFENSE, MIKE SMITH WHEN WILL YOU BRING OUR DEFENSE AROUND LIKE YOU DID IN BALTIMORE/JACKSONVILLE, OR IS IT THE FRONT OFFICE GIVING YOU CRAP TO WORK WITH AND BEING CHEAP LIKE THE BRAVES (ANOTHER SORE SUBJECT). THE DALLAS GAME REALLY PISSED ME OFF AS YOU CAN TELL.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THIS AGAIN,
FALCONS DEFENSE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!
I’M HAPPY FOR BROOKING HE GOT AWAY FROM THIS MIDDLE SCHOOL DEFENSE. OH YEAH DID I SAY GRIMES SUCKS YET.
MAN THANKS TO THE FRONT 7 WHICH HAD A CONTAIN ON WITTEN OTHER WISE THE SCORE WOULD BE 137-21
HOW IN THE WORLD COULD WE SIGN HOUSTON AND GRIMES TO THE 53 MAN ROSTER AND LET GO OF FOXWORTH
What can we say about the game sunday against the cowboys. the birds did not perform to their ability at all. The offensive line did a horrible job protecting matt ryan. Im sure im gonna offend alot of people whne i say this but, Michael Turner is a bust..the reason i say this is because he gets the ball and walks up to the line with no explosion. How come backs like norwood and snelling can gain yards on their carries but turner usually loses yards…and of course our defense is at the best its gonna be which aint good at all..like i said i know people will be mad at the comments but reguardless im still a fan even though im upset over a loss that should in my opinion been a win.
mr. e
people are going to throw you under the bus for saying turner is a bust, but i totally agree with you and i think last season was a fluke. what we saw from him in the playoff game against the cardinals is what we’ve saw from him all this season and thats what i believe we will continiue to see from him throughout the rest of his falcons career. he is young and healthy but he is playing like a washed up veteran. quite honestly i get sick watching him play tippy toes and jukes when he should be trucking and moving piles!!!!!!!
did tye hill play on sunday? , and will he be playing on monday night against N.O.??
I just wish we would have taken Sean Smith or Vonte Davis in the draft instead of Peria Jerry. Jerry was a 5th year senior for a reason (injuries). But he is done now and look what we have to show for it, out great 1st round pick (nothing, can we say another Jammal Anderson). What about Chris Owens he has got to be better than Grimes. Oh well just Ill quit venting, I just wanted nothing more than back to back winning seasons but thats just a dream with our corners who are in place now. I hope Mike Smith reads these post and cuts Grimes. Oh and Mr. E your not the only one feeling that way about Turner.
Yes the secondary needs a great deal of attention. Yet we have to goooooooooooooooooooo for it sometimes on 4th down. In my opinion not going for it on 4th and 2 and other short yardage has cost us 2 games. That old school of thinking punt most 4th downs can kill you now in the NFL.You have to have kill or be killed attitude. Matt Ryan wanted to go for it on 4th and short with 9 minutes and change and we were needing to keep the ball, coach Smith said no. You have to trust your quarterback and team in those situations. If you loose, loose with your fate in your own hands, with the ball. Please lets grow a pair in this new era of football.
Please allow Matt Ryan more control of the call in a given situation. He sees the game and can feel what the team needs to do. I say use the running back who is being most productive,(Snelling and Norwood are doing fine.) Turner is struggling. The defense is not so bad outside our secondary, Outside of the secondary the line is holding it’s own.
Please Coach Smith go for it on 4th and short within 2 to 4 yards for the 1st. When you are inside the enemies 30 with 4th and short and you need points to drive the dagger deep pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee do, go for it. We are better than this, I am so frustrated that I cannot explain.
Hey J mike I agree, im sure that no matter what happens over the weekend we gotta go back to work with a positive attitude and hi hopes for a better outcome in the next few days. I think the falcons are in great sense of that being one if not the only team to not suffer back to back losing games. with so much else said and already done i believe thats the best advantage we have going n2 next week. We gotta do like, some DB cream of the crops practices. Let Chris Owen, t hill and chev jackson battle it out. Leave the past starters just there..in the past because they very well may be the weakest link of our entire team. Thats right im pointing fingers. The coordinator has to see and do something about this if we wanna c more W than L’s. GO FALCONS!!
Buchanan Rossum Houston GRimes all part of D Hall of Shame. Chris Owens is the best DB we have. Play him please if he gets burned at least we can use the rookie excuse. I have no way to vouch for these former record holders of shame. I want veterans on my defense with a passion for stopping offense!
i think we should activate troy bergeron on monday night. well he is just another weapon, for ryan to throw to and another body for the saints to cover allowing roddy or Tony G. to get open to make a big play. what do yinz think??
I was a fan of Keith Brooking for many years and after Sundays display showed me what a real loser he is. It is safe to say Brooking was a good linebacker but never a game changing linebacker and was overpaid for most of his career. He led the Falcons in tackles for many years but his tackles were alway 5-10 yards down field. I watched him time after time get ran over by running backs(DeAngelo Williams, Johnathan Stewart, Marion Barber, Cadilac WSilliams, etc). The last memory I have of Brooking was him blowing two coverages that did not allow Ryan and the Falcons to get back on the field in the 2009 wildcard game in Arizona. A 10 year ve3teran at the time and he did not realize he had to keep the tight end in front of him and prevent the first down. What is more disturbing was that Brooking was a complete non-factor in the game 2 tackles. I watched him miss Turner(who was running like a turtle) on the one nice run he had. I watched him again miss Snelling twice on runs and miss on a few other tackles. For Brooking to parade the way that he did and then apologize…and then insult again during the press conference is telling of a true loser. The Falcons wanted Brooking but he wanted too much money for this time of his career. He should have know it was his time to step back and allow the younger guys come in and play for the love. Take less money and he would stil be a Falcon. Peterson is the saem age but is a much better upgrade at his position and he knows it. He was respected by the organization and given more than a fair chance to say goodbye to the city and the fans(most teams would not have done that) and this is how he behaves. Shame on you Brooking and you are a HUGE disappointment in my eyes. For years I defended you to co-workers when you were called a over hyped coaches boy. I really hope the Falcons meet you guys again in the playoff because you’re going to eat more than crow my friend. Bryan Cox called you out several years ago and said I don’t know how this guy makes the pro-bowl every year when al of his tackles are down field. You were never a game changer and your 2 tackles confirm that.
@Mr.Shannon I feel your pain and great insight to the defense. We are not as bad upfront as I thought we might be. JA98 is actually playing better and I gave him alot of crap. If we made one play(bab sacking Romo) we were looking at a different game.
WE NEED TY LAW OR CHRIS MCALLISTER AND TRY OUT TY HILL WHAT THE HELL VANGORDER AND TD DOING ABOUT OUR DEFENSE
Mcallister will be very good edition for us i totally agree…….
i agree too lets do it NOW!!!
CB patrick robinson next yr in the draft he is a must draft for the falcons d,a tall lankey cb, who is pretty fast will elevate the d to a new level
Imma say it like this. The front seven did wut they they could. Its jus the back four im upset wit. Miles Austin IS NOT THAT GOOD!!!!!! Tony Nomo IS NOT THAT GOOD!!!!!! All of our DBs jus need to be way more physical at the line. Point Blank-get the recievers upset and watch the penalties start racking up……
Go for it on 4th and anything less than 5 yards especially at the later end of the game.
