Mughelli Misses Practice

Fullback Ovie Mughelli, who left Sunday’s game at San Francisco with a leg injury, spent Wednesday’s practice time in the training room according to Head Coach Mike Smith.

The coach said Mughelli, who hasn’t missed a game since the 2005 season, is “day to day.” He is listed on the Piedmont Healthcare Injury Report with a calf injury.

“We hope to see some progress and get him back out here tomorrow from his leg injury,” Smith said to a gathering of media after Wednesday’s practice.

Should Mughelli be unable to play, the Falcons have options.

Former Georgia star Verron Haynes is listed as the team’s No. 2 fullback while Jason Snelling, a 223-pound tailback, saw action at Mughelli’s position late in Sunday’s win.

Smith said the team can continue with its normal plans on offense if Mughelli misses the game.

“We’re prepared to do what we do and really, if it happens to go that way, we feel very comfortable.”

Through the first four games of 2009, Mughelli has recorded two catches for 22 yards and a touchdown. In his career, the seven-year pro has 23 rushing attempts for 73 yards (one score) and 40 receptions for 310 yards (three scores).

He’s also been a key contributor in the run game, clearing the way for running back Michael Turner’s 1,699-yard season in 2008.

ADDITIONAL NOTES FROM SMITTY…

… Smith says, statistically, the Chicago Bears boast the best special teams unit in the league. Chicago has held its opponents to a 37-yard net punting average and return men Johnny Knox, Danieal Manning and Devin Hester have combined for 447 return yards and a touchdown on kickoffs (12.5-yard per return average on punts).

But the Falcons like their return game led by Eric Weems.

“Eric Weems continues to progress as our primary returner and the guys have been working hard,” Smith said.

Weems, who replaced and injured Harry Douglas as the team’s primary punt returner in the preseason, has also taken over as the team’s first option on kickoff returns.

… The Bears are coming off a bye week but that doesn’t seem to concern the head coach, who noted a stat he revealed to his team when talking about all the opponents to face the Falcons off a break.

“There’s a lot made about the bye weeks,” he said. “Statistically, from 2000 to this season, the team coming off the bye has only won 56 percent of the time. It’s all about preparation and who plays the best.”

Only 56% of teams win coming off their bye week? That’s a surprisingly low number (but almost not surprising, given the parity of the league).

The nice thing about facing all these teams with byes this early is that we won’t be so worn down from the long drag of the season. The season’s still young and we’re still relatively fresh, I would imagine.

This is gonna be a good game. I just hope we put them down early and often so I don’t have to relive a heart attack every snap. :P

The Chiefs are down on DL Glenn Dorsey and may be willing to trade him, according to NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora.

La Canfora says the new coaching staff doesn’t like Dorsey, the No. 5 pick in the 2008 draft. Like many other Chiefs, Dorsey landed in coach Todd Haley’s doghouse when he showed up to camp out of shape and flunked a conditioning test. Dorsey has been coming around lately and giving up on him just 21 games into his career would be a very surprising move as the trade deadline approaches. He’d also be impossible to trade with a contract including $22.5 million guaranteed.

Do not think that he is Coach Smiths type of guy.
