New Falcons cornerback Tye Hill played his college football at Clemson, suiting up at a stadium less than two hours drive from Atlanta’s practice facility.
That alone provides some extra incentive for the former St. Louis Ram, who was traded to the Falcons Tuesday morning.
“It’s definitely going to motivate me a whole lot more,” Hill said to a small gathering of media Wednesday afternoon. “Not to say I wasn’t motivated in St. Louis, but just to be here and know people on the team and my family’s around… I feel like I’m home.”
http://video.atlantafalcons.com/video/150943/150943_2009-09-02-125410.flvHill, a first-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, has recorded 94 tackles (79 solo), four interceptions, 15 passes defensed, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble in his career.
As a rookie, he started 10 of 16 games and finished the season with 42 tackles (33 solo), a team-high three interceptions, four passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
He worked on the right and left side of the field in St. Louis but says he’s willing to do whatever it takes to catch up and make an impact on the Falcons roster.
He also said he’s recovered from a knee injury that set him back earlier in his career.
Hill now turns his attention to learning the Falcons defense.
“Their verbiage is completely different then ours but, of course, there’s only so many things you can do with 11 guys,” Head Coach Mike Smith said. “It will be a learning curve for him but Tye has basically played under two different systems there in St. Louis.”
MORE WEDNESDAY NOTES…
… Smith is not ready to name a backup quarterback to Matt Ryan even though seven-year veteran Chris Redman played well and led a game-winning touchdown drive Saturday against the Chargers.
“We’re not going to make that announcement until about 90 minutes before our first game when we have to turn in our third quarterback,” the coach said.
Smith said the rotation between quarterbacks Thursday evening will be different than other preseason games.
… Jerious Norwood and William Moore will not play Thursday but, if the team weren’t on a short week, their chances of seeing action would increase
“Those guys will not play in the ball game,” Smith said. “We’re still hopeful if we were playing this Sunday they could possibly be ready to go… On a short turnaround we’re not going to put them out there.”
… The Ravens game offers a chance for players lower on the depth chart to show their skills before final cuts. It’s also a chance to evaluate position battles.
“In the secondary we want to continue to get a good look at Christopher Owens,” Smith said. “Chevis Jackson will not only play nickel in this ball game, but he’ll also get some snaps at corner.”
The coach also said linebackers Robert James, Spencer Adkins and Jamie Winborn could be fighting for one or two spots depending on how the team allocates special teams positions. He added four reserve offensive linemen are likely battling for just two openings.

is he gonna play thursday????
No he won’t he has only just got here and needs time to learn the playbook. He won’t even start in the regular season for a bit
Coach Smith said he won’t be playing Thursday because he is behind, but I think that’s pretty ridiculous. How behind can he possibly be? He just needs to know what his assignments are for each play. If he shows a lot of promise in practice it will be hard to keep him off the field as bad as our secondary has been playing.
Tree, he has to learn (I would imagine) several hundred assignments.
Not only does he have to learn them, he has to practice them to make sure he has the assignments right. Not something you can do in a couple days.
The same thing happened when Foxworth arrived late in preseason last year. He didn’t play until week 6 when Grimes got hurt.
i say we plug him in ,in miami , after he practices alot up till the first real game. so we can see what he has, ya know???
Great trade!TD does it again!
all smiles for tye hill.
hell, ill play tye hill now… it wouldnt matter if he knows the play book or not… the whole secondary looks like they dont kno the playbook… he couldnt play no worse than grimes or houston…
The truth is Grimes and Houston know the book. Houston is fresh off an injury with no real playtime for seven months. Grimes is good he’s to little to pressure the big guys especially with Rivers launching tactical warfare. There is a reason he has put up so many yards. The main problem was the pass rush. Where was abe and jamal? Grimes got the only sack. Where were the safeties? Who was supposed to cover the screen? What i am saying is that the whole D was asleep.
Falconface–that’s the right of it if you understand football. They lack a playmaker. They need someone who can ignite them. This’ll require patience–I thought the pass AND run defense were very poorly executed and there seemed to be adjustmentment problems. The D on thescreen was really awful. So far Lofton looks very stable, Abraham will be thhere, I’d like to see more Sidbury cuz he has ridiculous speed and this is wierd…Bierman has been all over the place. I’d do Anderson for a starting CB in a second, problem is I don’t thhink we could get someone to make the deal.
im just glad we got someone that will help our secondary
I think William Moore is the playmaker which you speak of. He’s young and has been injured, but I think once he gets up to full speed he’ll be the beast the secondary has been seeking. He’s got the size of a thumper safety but he’s got the ball skills of someone who can catch a ball and run with it a bit. He’s just young and not ready yet, which does us no good right this second.
I’ll keep saying this until my fingers fall off. I’m not making any judgments on the players until Miami rolls into town. Until then, these games hold little weight to me.
That being said, this 4th game will be a good one, with the young players playing for their NFL lives. At the end of the day, I trust the FO to keep/cut the right people. They’ll take care of business.
atlanta falcons r reall y horrific they cant throw the ********** ball they also have the ****** defense in the ******** league they are so pethetic vick could own you by himself ur giving matt ryan a bj
Yeah boy, This is what I was talking abooouuuutt. Go Falcons
You are a real idiot, simply put. You must be a kid. Yeah, you are a kid.
Vick was good for the organization when we were trying to fill the stands and build a fan base. But, it was not all his doing. Aurthur blank is a great business man that made good decisions and Vick’s on field play made the Falcons more attractive. I will not say that he is not a good player, but he is not what this team needs right now. Vick’s passing yards per season has never been as high as Ryan’s rookie year.(3,400) You would have to to add Vick’s passing(avg. 2400) and rushing yards (most 1,039) together to get those kinds of numbers out of him.
So you see the falcons can pass the ball. Roddy White’s Pro Bowl selection proves it. Tony Gonzalez just makes the passing game better. The run game will get better, which is scary seeing that they rushed for over 2,100 yards.
Now to take care of the BJ comment. The Falcons actually gave the BJ to Vick and what they got in return was a whole lot of controversy and a potential franchise wrecking restructuring. The BJ that Ryan received came from the league in the form of Rookie of the Year.
In the last 10 years both the Eagles and the Falcons have been to the Super Bowl once. Both teams lost. So if success in football is measured by championships, ill say we are about even. No matter how many times you have been to the NFC Championship game you are still just as crappy as you believe the falcons are.
@vick is legend eagles 4evr
Hey vick is legend. Very insightful thoughts man.
He is not a savior for our secondary so dont expect to see a big improvement real quick, our line needs to get more pressure on the qb to help the secondary out. You can only cover for so long no matter how good our secondary is some one will get open with no pressure on the qb thats where we need to focus.
Bingo! u hit it sendog. A secondary is only as good as it’s pass rush. U can have shut down corners but if the QB has time to fold laundry back there, the D will get picked apart. Are u the real Sendog by the way? Bid Fan.@sendog
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA That vickis legend/eagles 4ever is a truly smart guy isnt he? This guy must not have watched the years of mediocre VICK football. Im not downplaying that he is a very talented young man, just not at the QB position.And he has already admitted to not trying while he was here saying that he was the last one in the facility and the first one out. He is the best/worst thing to happen to ATLANTA football. He brought some attention back to ATLANTA but that is about it. He will never know how to truly lead a team like MATT RYAN. So you guys have fun with him screwing up your team chemistry in Philly. GO FALCONS
@vick is legend eagles 4evr
Our O line is gonna split some heads while Turner drags your secondary in to the inzone. Now you got two divas in the lockeroom. Baby moma drama all year for the eagles all year long. No continuity on the feild yall ain’t even contenders. We got one of the most complete offenses in the league. By the way you just missed the school bus.
westbrook/ mccoy wil pone your d line coz our o line gona crck ur heads and once they past that d line ur rubbish db’s aint gonna do nothing
also i doubt turner will be draggin our seconday into the endzone coz i think u forgot we have the best runstop defense in the NFL lol
who does this guy think he is vick is a legend ha he thinks hes so hard
haha. i have no comment for vick is legend and obviously he doesnt watch football because steelers and ravens have the best run and pass defense period. this guy is a joke just tryin to get a rise out of everyone. Hes so pathetic with the matt ryan comment ill just let matt ryans arm doing the talkin this year

Dont pay this kid no attention …

i mean start him next sunday … week 1 … i am a true falcon fan and i believe in TD and Smitty … but i aint gonna lie i am extremely worried about this secondary …
@vick is legend eagles 4evr

[...] Jerious Norwood is being held out as a precaution. Can’t say I particularly blame the Falcons for being careful with our backup running back, especially since he’s going to be leaned on more heavily than ever before with Michael Turner not wanting to approximate his twelve hojillion carry season again. As long as he’s fine by Week 1, we’re all happy. [...]
