Camp Questions: Part Two

Writing about a football team is like a muscle.

Get lazy and avoid workouts, you lose something. Work it to hard, you burn out.

With that in mind, this will be my last blog post until July 13. I know everyone is starved for some Falcons info so I’ve written a few things for the website that will publish while I take some time off but, keep in mind, a quiet time in Flowery Branch is most rare (and we must take advantage).

Enjoy the second installment of “Questions and Answers” and feel free to ask more questions while I rest my blogging brain.

In the next week you can expect features on Tony Gonzalez, Michael Turner and the running game and the team’s young secondary to pop up on AtlantaFalcons.com.

Thanks,j-mike.That told me alot im excited about the season,im just wondering about our defense.

Only 3 experts that I’ve asked so far agree with me… Since the Falcons secondary is so young, why not sign a veteran like Chris McCalister to a 2-3 year deal? I understand our secondary is already crowded, but crowded with what exactly? If nothing else, he would provide guidance, leadership, and toughness to a very unproven and undersized secondary. Even if he only turns into a situational player, how could he not help a team full of 0-2 year DB’s?

We don’t need a vet.at CB because our D-Line,and LB’s will take all the pressure off of them.Besides we have a few vets in the secondary. The cornerback we got from the texans a few years ago will be healthy this year. And we have our starting safety from last year.Calm down guys we’ll be fine!

Von Huntchins was signed last year from Houston and is a solid vetran cornerback who is expected to be at the least the nickel cornrer. Our free saftey in Eric Coleman is entering his third year with atlanta and will be a starter. So out of five spots that see significan playing time you have two that are vetrans so that point is irrelevant. The question is more of how good is the Dline going to be stoping the run and putting pressure on the QB because if your line gets no pressure then your secondary gets exposed badly.

  5. July 7th, 2009 at 02:11 | #5

Point taken. Now please take into account that Von Hutchins is a vet, but how many snaps have u seen him take honestly? Also, we’re depending on a LB corps that we have never seen play together. Honestly, I only trust Lofton. Peterson should be playing strong side, he can’t keep up with slot recievers anymore. And besides John Abraham, who do we know is going to start on our D-Line?

Why do you think Chris McCalister is still a free agent? Because he’s a vet trying to wait out training camp’s or because he’s just to old to play corner? Have faith in our coach’s. Yeah these kid’s are young. Yeah they’re going to make bad play’s. I think we were like 27′th in defence last year so it ain’t like we got far to fall. Just try being positive and look at these kid’s like fresh canvise’s. And hope we got good painter’s.

JJ – I second that. We’re going to have to be better on defense this year.

israel – babs will start on the d-line. the other two are question marks – JA will start at the other DE, but who knows if he’ll finish the season w/ him or Davis. the other DL is the real question – TLewis & Peria Jerry are likely.

gunboat – i dont know if our DL & LB corp will give THAT much support – first year starters in Nicholas and whoever the hell we put in at the DT on the other side of Babs. We COULD be great, but there are no signs that we’re ready to leading the league on D.

With that being said, our CB corps will be better than expected – von hutchins is still dealing with alot of pain in his foot, but grimes and houston will be as good as usual, who knows how good chevis, owens and middleton will be.. TD’s done pretty well so far…

AND DON’T FORGET, WE’RE IN THE 2ND YEAR OF THE PROCESS – BE PATIENT; THIS TEAM IS A FUTURE DYNASTY!!

  8. July 9th, 2009 at 13:48 | #8

think the falcons should go and get A. toomer from the GIANTS because with adding him and Tont G, white ,jenkins, douglas and Turner all i can say is Super bow44 here we come. what do you think??

  9. angry banker
    July 9th, 2009 at 20:00 | #9

jon – really? you want to add a 4th receiver to a run first offense?

  10. JJ
    July 9th, 2009 at 20:57 | #10

Dito. Offence is solid baring inguires. We just gotta coach up that D.

  11. July 9th, 2009 at 21:33 | #11

why not if it would help the team. sure

  12. July 10th, 2009 at 11:19 | #12

then sign derrick brooks to help the D

  13. angry banker
    July 10th, 2009 at 19:17 | #13

jon – i think your falling into a dangerous pitfall. you’re picking at names, but i would say its more important to look at team needs. is toomer a good receiver – yes. does atl need a receiver? lets see will he supplant – white? no. jenkins? no. douglas? no. finneran? maybe in certain situations. so, why would we go out and sign an aging free agent to be a 4th string wide receiver? wouldn’t our funds (and cap space) be better spent elsewhere? how about adding a veteran to CB corps? I LOVE D Brooks, hell, I’m a FSU grad – but where do we put him? Certainly not ahead of Peterson or Lofton and Brooks isn’t fast enough to play SLB. Even if he was, I’d still want Nicholas there. Your heart is there, but you’re looking at our situation the wrong way.

  14. July 10th, 2009 at 20:50 | #14

i understand you completly but i feel we are are one big name away from contending for the super bowl. ya know i mean adding tony was good but i feel we need 1 more.

  15. JJ
    July 10th, 2009 at 21:40 | #15

Adding Tony was great. And it filled a big gap in our offence. At least for a couple of years. Big names can be O.K. But sometimes it’s the young kid who’s trying to make a name for himself that really shine’s. Look at the Pat’s, they love vet’s at Linebacker but even they are getting younger this year.

    July 11th, 2009 at 00:56 | #16

jon – yeah, you might be right; heres our needs as I seem them: 1. vet depth at LT. Baker has proven injury prone and Todd Weiner was savior last year. Right now we got Will Svitek and Quinn Ojinakka. A veteran LT would put my mid at ease about Ryan’s blindside.
CB depth – yes we have a ton of guys, but all young, all short, none exceptionally fast. A solid vet (like foxworth last year) would make me feel better about our secondary.
outside of that, I think we’re a championship team.

    July 11th, 2009 at 11:10 | #17

angry banker-I agree, not signing Foxworth back was a huge mistake! The guy was the best corner, leading the team in INT’s.I really have to question that move. Both Houston, and Grimes are too small!Chevis has got to step it up this year.He was a all american at LSU,what happen? He has the size, and speed to be an elite corner in this league.I think we are going to have to do what the Cardinals did last year. They started a rookie CB all season, and he did okay minus the super bowl.

  18. July 11th, 2009 at 11:26 | #18

lets go and sign a need at whatever position is nrcssary .there is alot of guys out there, lets get one .

  19. JJ
    July 12th, 2009 at 00:57 | #19

There will be more cuts comeing as they try to sign rookies and treem the fat. You might get a better player in the comeing weeks than whos out there now.

  20. July 12th, 2009 at 04:03 | #20

JJ- I like the way you think. I’ve done my research, and as of right now I’m ok (not elated) with our secondary. I do agree with Gunboat and Angry Banker though; not signing “the Fox” was the first mistake by Dimitroff. But then again who knows what kind of player he was off the field or how much he was asking for? I still believe our DB’s are too small especially for the recievers we play this year: (Mushin Muhammad twice, R. Moss, Crabtree, Roy Williams, Colston twice, Clayton twice, Cotchery, and T.O.) Even more so, think about the QB’s we play this year. If we ended the year 27th overall with a much weaker schedule, I see trouble in 09′. I hope I’m wrong but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

  21. July 12th, 2009 at 11:15 | #21

well there are 2 free agents out there not signed. and they are LTwayne gandy, and CB TY law WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT SIGNING THOSE GUYS??

  22. July 12th, 2009 at 12:16 | #22

we need some vets on d…… why did we let foxworth go, he played better in atlanta than denver… and locked down the starting position…. atlanta never was known for signing big time free agents on either of the ball, thats why we never won a superbowl… b/c we dont take chances in good free agent markets nor drafting…. vick was the best draft pick ive seen in yrs….

  23. July 12th, 2009 at 12:21 | #23

we need another DE that can play opposite of abraham that can put pressure on the QB b/c jamaal anderson is a bust, one or 2 sacks in 2 yrs of being in the league thats not good enough, especially when all the focus is on abraham…. we let big grady jackson go, that was dumb… we let foxworth go that was dumb and our best corner back is chris houston, as a falcon fan, im embarrassed… erik coleman isnt good at tackling, big hits, nor coverage.. we dont even know who is going to play the other saftey position… so im guessing teams going to avg. about 300 passing yards against the falcons this yr…. so be prepared for it….

  24. July 12th, 2009 at 16:16 | #24

I agree the Jamal Anderson experiment is over. Arthur Blank took a gamble and it backfired. Every draft pick can’t be a gem. It starts hurting the team when u continue to play him and he’s not contributing IN ANY WAY. I personally have always wanted what Arizona had last year. A rookie to come in and MAKE a name for himself. Half the world didn’t know who Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie or Early Doucet was. This is our chance. What it really comes out to is let’s keep our fingers crossed and see what happens.

  25. July 13th, 2009 at 09:35 | #25

ive been a fan of the falcons since 89′ and its starting to piss me off when i look at the draft or free agent list and we never get the big names or good players who can contribute…. every yr we let good players go… deangelo hall, deion sanders, andre rison, bert emanuel, patrick kerney and more… its sickning… then we pass over good draft picks and never trade up to get good players… we couldve traded up for crabtree b.c michael jenkins aint nothing, hell ill start harry douglass over jenkins and finneran is bust… we need good players to make matt ryan a great qb.. every great qb always had atleast 2 good wideouts and a mighty TE…. we need somebody on the opposite side of roddy white…. please hire me so i can go get the players, lol…

  26. July 13th, 2009 at 10:10 | #26

thank you thats why i said to go and get armani toomer. or even anquan bolden. a great receiver like one of those guys. ya know D hall was a bust look at him now. he stunk it up in okland. his best years are begind him and i agree with what Atl did by getting rid of him.because they knew that was the best for the team same with kerney. the only exception is Prime Time he was the better of em’ all. well what do ya think??

  27. July 13th, 2009 at 15:26 | #27

In the Falcons defense, nobody knew Jamal Anderson was going to be… well, Jamal Anderson. D’Angelo “Fall” had to leave. He played when he wanted to in ATL. He routinely took plays off. Prime Time: we should’ve kept him, Rison: good move, Bert: I’m only 24, Kerney: past his prime, it just looks worse because we haven’t replaced him yet. Trade up for Crabtree? He hasn’t played one down yet, he may NEVER play a down and we’re already second guessing our entire draft. That’s exactly what would’ve given up to get him. Those type of commments should at least hold off til at least mid-season. Let’s see what we have. Remember, nobody was singing Roddy White’s praises 3 years ago! He was getting the same flack that M. Jenkins is getting now. He was only 223 yards from a 1,000 yard season. (773) As for the great QB comment, remember Tom Brady just got his toys 2 years ago. Before that he had no real proven recievers.

  28. July 13th, 2009 at 19:03 | #28

deangelo wasnt a bust in atlanta, he played good man to man coverage… he even played terrell owens good when owens was with the eagles and thats when owens he his best year and hall was the only db that checked him truly man to man… the reason why he did a poor job in oakland b.c they put him into zone coverage and thats not halls game, thats like puttin deion or champ in nothing but zone coverage… you cant put hall, champ or deion in zone coverage b.c they were born to cover, not to play certain parts of the field… who said patrick kerney is passed his prime, hes nowhere near that… he just had a double digit sack yr for seattle… patrick is far better than jamaal…. we shouldve kept grady jackson too, now we dont have a threat for a run stopper, jonathan babs. not gonna get the job done like grady….

  29. July 14th, 2009 at 04:30 | #29

First of all Mr. Williams, never, EVER compare D. Hall to Prime Time or Champ. Don’t even use their names in the same sentence. D’Angelo was overrated no matter how u look at it. He covered T.O. well, that is an accomplishment. However if Steve Smith averaged 140-something yards against Atlanta every year for 2 or 3 straight years…. Anyway, Noone knew Jamal Anderson was gonna suck as much as he does. That’s the reason Mr. Blank felt confident in letting Kerney go to Seattle. Of course he’s better than Jamal Anderson, if he got 2 sacks a year he would be better than him….. Oh and fyi, we ranked 25th against the run last year WITH Grady Jackson. He can’t be solely blamed for that stat he didn’t even play every down. But with that being said, why not give somebody who’s not a rotational player a chance to help us move up?

  30. July 14th, 2009 at 11:54 | #30

steve smith didnt avg. nothing against the falcons when d. hall checked him, he always had a rough time when hall checked him… i watched every falcons game since 89′, i mean every single one of them… smitty always was shut down by hall, he even admitted on espn that hall was the best corner to ever check him…. jon gruden once said on tv, that if the falcons didnt want d. hall, the bucs would love to have him b/c of the cover 2 they play….

  31. July 14th, 2009 at 12:54 | #31

yeah but mr. williams, tell me this. whats D hall doing now?? huh???? :) lol

well d. hall, went to the redskins, locked down a starting position, got 3-4 interceptions after gettin cut halfway thru the season with raiders… he played better with the skins b.c they play man to man, he sucked with the raiders b.c they play 90% zone…. its no corner on the falcons now thats better than hall… the only reason why the falcons got rid of him was b.c of his attitude, it wasnt b.c of his play… think about what you sayin…
d.hall can come to the falcons now and lock down a starting position right now…. bet that

  34. July 14th, 2009 at 21:18 | #34

if you ask me i say the skins can keep him. ass he was a cancer on the falcons, good at times but not somone you’d want to stick around. i think the falcons are doing better without him.
