Adkins Adds to the Flock

June 22nd, 2009

The Falcons announced the signing of linebacker Spencer Adkins Monday afternoon. Five of the team’s eight picks in the 2009 NFL Draft are now under contract.

First-round pick Peria Jerry, second-round pick William Moore and fourth-round pick Lawrence Sidbury remain unsigned.

Atlanta selected Adkins in the sixth round (176th overall) out of Miami (Fla.).

He was the first player taken from the school in the draft.

Adkins caught the team’s eye with his speed, which was confirmed with times as low as 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

He was a backup middle linebacker and came into games as a pass-rusher. He finished 2008 with 20 tackles and four sacks.

On draft day, Falcons director of player personnel Les Snead said the Falcons like Adkins quickness and look to use him as a rush linebacker and special teams contributor.

“He was a part-time starter mainly used in a sub-package where they rushed him off the edge,” Snead said.

Here’s one discussion about the cap from another website (the team doesn’t address it officially).

I’m sure you can find much more if you search online.

As for rookies, no need to worry about the cap. Each team gets a rookie pool to sign its rookies in and it’s taken care of inside the existing cap.

I wouldn’t even think about that until I saw something in the news or some other kind of report. Both are good receivers but both also have some well-documented off-the-field stories. Think of it this way. The Falcons have every starter returning on an offense that ranked in the top-10 last year, including the top 3 receivers. Coaches are confident in the group and there have been a lot of undrafted free agent moves at the position to create some depth and camp battles. Like all positions on the roster, I look for the team to give the players here a chance to compete.

    A LB running a 4.3

That’d be like sticking Jerious Norwood + 40 pounds in an edge rusher. Holy smokes, this guy could be groomed into a monster.

Who wants plex, he might not even play half the year. Brandon Marshall is juts one more bad family night away from going to jail, not to mention out of the league. If you wanted questionable characters on the team, they should have kept Vick.

I’m on the falcons bandwagon but two things scare me the secondary and are run stopping ability we need more than john abraham and chris houston

I have season tickets to the Miami Hurricanes and saw Spencer play quite a bit. I wouldnt be surpirsed if he could develop into a starter for you guys. He’s a better player than his round selection suggests. Have fun watching him play
