That’s “undrafted free agents.”
Every team adds them and, sometimes, they become stars in the NFL. No matter what, they’re the underdogs everyone loves to root for.
Scout.com reports the Falcons have agreed to terms with multiple undrafted free agents including:
- Clemson wide receiver Aaron Kelly
- West Virginia offensive lineman Ryan Stanchek
- Missouri linebacker Brock Christopher
- Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson
- San Diego State quarterback/wide receiver Darren Mougey
- Northern Arizona punter Robbie Dehaze
Click on the names of the players for bio information. The team, of course, won’t announce any signings until a player is, well, signed.
That could be another day or two based on travel and other logistics.
If accurate, each of these additions provides training camp depth and possible long-term additions to the roster.
Kelly is similar in size to wide receiver Michael Jenkins and is one of the more athletic rookies entering the game at the position.
Plenty of good linemen have come from West Virginia and Stancheck is no exception. He may have to move to the inside because of his size but the Falcons are pretty good at “coaching up” players at any position along the front five.
Wilson is the most well-known of the players on this list because he played quarterback in the SEC. Alabama quarterbacks haven’t enjoyed success in the NFL of late but Wilson certainly has the college stats to get noticed when practices begin. He left Alabama as the school’s leader in passing yards (7,924) and touchdowns (47).
Mougey was a backup quarterback for the Aztecs and a solid wide receiver. He notched 66 catches for 805 yards and six touchdows over the last two seasons.

What about undrafted rookies? It looked like Ellerbe and Southerland rae both still out there. I woudl push hard to get both these guys into camp.
Any news if the Falcons are going to talk to Leroy Hill from Seattle now that he is available.
There is a good corner out there by the name of Devon Shorter. He lead the number one D in that nation in pics..He played right down the street at Clark Atlanta. I wish they would give him a camp invite he is great prospect to develop in two years could be solid starter.
they need too . Hill would be a great pick up for atlanta.
I think Kelly will make the team. He has exceptional size and is a pretty darn good WR from the times I’ve watched him play in person.
If Southerland is still out there, I would take a good, hard look at him.
I know fullbacks don’t get much credit, but look at it this way: Someone had to open the hole for Knowshon.
I know he had an injury issue but he’s a tough back and he’d be a good backup that ATL can groom for when Ovie retires.
Unfortunately Southerland has apparently signed with the Jets.
@Zippo
Yes you are right someone did open the wholes, but wasn’t .
@Zippo
Seriously? Ovie is 28 and signed for four more years. Don’t think anyone needs to be groomed to be taking over for him right now. Southerland’s a good player that shouldn’t be anywhere near this team, if he expects to play in the NFL.
i say try and sign as many names as possiable… and weed out the bad ones… there can be no harm in it
Why don’t the falcons persue in trying to sign undrafted WR-Kevin Olgetree, cuz he has hight, speed, and great hands if you watch him play with just a little work could be a great Wr in the league. Also signing LB-Dannel Ellerbe Great size and quickness to get to the ball some work could make a great LB core beside petterson and lofton. PS…Ellerbe is way better then the sorry LB-Wire on are team and WR-olgetree is better then some of the WR on the team other then that I think the team had a GREAT off-season with Gonzalez and Petterson And GOOD draft day other then the size and skill of the CB we drafted Keep it up falcons would love to see my fav. team win the superbowl GO FALCONS
i hope we go after hill from seattle. he’s a sure tackler, and he would beast up our lb core
The Falcons shouldn’t touch Ellerbe. He misses tackles all over creation. You can’t just hit someone and expect them to fall over. Have to use the arms to tackle. Just because he played at UGA, doesn’t make him NFL material.
ANYONE OF THESE URFA ARE GONA BE SPECIAL TEAMERS AT BEST.
Look at Kelly and Mougey’s size and speed. Mougey got TE writin all over him in. Maybe Tony’s replacement 3-4 yrs from now.
Sign Ellerbe from UGA!!!!!!! Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe, Ellerbe!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why exactly would they agree to terms with any QB’s? Personally, I believe that we’re pretty set in that area with Ryan, Redman and Shockley.
He is not a rookie but Jayson Foster got released today somebody needs to give this kid a chance I wish the Falcons would pick him up he is home grown will do wonders on the speacial teams PR KR.
John Parker Wilson will be a good signing. Redman and Shockley can fight it out for the backup job and you can groom Wilson. He has the height and smarts to be a starter in the NFL. Remember no one thought Cassel or Brady would be effective starters in the NFL and look what happened. We should trust TD’s skills at evaluating QB’s. I was excited when I heard Wilson was not drafted hoping we’d sign him, because I don’t think Redman or Shockley are long term solutions at back up QB. Hopefully, he’ll develop into a Matt Cassel, Tom Brady type QB. If not he didn’t cost us a draft pick.
Mougey is a great athlete and an even better person. Congrats on a great pick-up.
The Falcons have not switched to a 3-4 defense have they??
I sure wish they would switch to the 3-4…with jerry’s size at nose and ends like abraham and … I just forgot the white guys name… LB core needs to beef up, brookings is slowing down,… Their secondary could certainly play that style…I would love to see the 3-4 in Atlanta!
Here’s a vote for signing UDFA Jared Bronson, TE from Central Washington. He had pretty good combine numbers and could develop into a solid receiver and blocker while Gonzo shows him how to be a Hall of Famer! And I agree about signing Ga. LB Dannell Ellerbe but “character concerns” may be cause be a problem (suspended for three games in 06′).
You need at least four quarterbacks to run training camp smoothly. But there’s a chance for a competition at No. 2 and No. 3 quarterback.
