Toughness the Key with O-Line Pick

With the second of two, fifth-round selections in the NFL Draft the Falcons picked North Carolina tackle Garrett Reynolds.

A massive lineman (6-foot-8, 309 lbs.), Reynolds is noted for his toughness. What he lacks in athleticism he makes up for in grit.

Director of Player Personnel Les Snead said that played a role in the decision as the team looked to add some depth back to the offensive line in the wake of Todd Weiner’s retirement.

Reynolds was a three-year starter at North Carolina, primarily at right tackle.

The Falcons like tough, hard-working offensive linemen and used work ethic to put together one of the best years in franchise history for the front five. The group led the way for Pro Bowl running back Michael Turner’s 1,699 yards and finished with a franchise-low 17 sacks allowed.

Reynolds is the nephew of former 49ers linebacker Jack “Hacksaw” Reynolds.

Dimitroff said it himself that they don’t get caught up in combine numbers. He said the numbers are all well and good but he’s looking for ball players. Thats why i like the way he’s handled this team.

Perfect draft with one pick to go. Five new defensive players, add a little depth to the O-line. Just great to see this unfold.

I’m going to say something marginally stupid about the bench press numbers: when you have longer arms, it’s harder to do more reps. And long arms are good on an offensive lineman, right?

Does that sound like a rationalization or what?

Anyway, doesn’t matter. Sounds like even if he stands there, it will take a long time just to get around him.

cmash im not talking about 7 or 8 years ago…yeah unc has been good..i was talking about this year. unc was one of the weaker teams in one of the weaker conferences.

Aye matty ice give the guy a chance. We still have vets that can work with this guy and make him a good player. Our offensive line is good for now so with guidance and practice he can help us have another playoff run. Injuries are random so dont doubt the guy yet. Wait until preseason before you judge him.

Garrett is a personal friend so if your a falcon fan like we know are trust me when I say that no draft pick this year will work harder for your team. You guys are lucky to have him.

His lower amount of reps are probably due to the fact that he more than likely has a wingspan the size of a small airplane. If I remember correctly, it’s harder to bench with longer arms.

    @JonP17

It is difficult for a long armed man to do the reps a shorter armed man can do. There are other ways to judge strength. I am sure the Falcons have done just tha.

I think that was a great pick for an O-lineman, hes big he can move for his size, and he has long arms which are a key for becoming great lineman. He can get stronger and learn from the veterans trust me this guy is going to turn into a solid lineman if not a great lineman

I think NFL is dumb. All it does is keep my husband away from me and with his “bro’s”. Please, go home tonight and do something for your wife instead of obsessing over this fat lineman

Andre Smith (6th pick) only had like 15 reps.

The falcons look strong going into 2009..although we havew a tough schedule we have a nasty offensive (if matt Ryan progresses)with Gonzo, White, Turner, Jenkins, Fin and Norwood. Now we have a deep Defensive line with trey lewis, Jerry, John, Sidbury and Davis. I just think we wasted picks on corners when we could sign a veteran to help team Houston and Jackson like Dre Bly or Ken Lucas
